Upa Yoga

Upa yoga literally means sub-yoga or pre-yoga. Someone who is just thinking of starting yoga. It's a good preparation to prepare your body and mind to go for an advanced form of yoga practice. If dig down into human energy physiology you will find that energy is concentrated on your nodes or joints. From these nodes or energy confluences, different energy channels or energy pathways spread in different directions. These energy pathways are known as Nadis. In the human body, there are 72000 nadis, and these nadis are branching out of two basic nadis Ida and Pingala. In the human energy physiological structure, there are 112 nodes or energy confluences or joints. If you cut open the body you will not find any nadis in its physical manifestation. These are the pathways in which energy moves.

So why I am here talking about the Nadis and nodes? When you do Upa yoga it basically provides the necessary movements and fluidity to the muscles and the joints. So ultimately it is opening the energy confluences and clearing the energy pathways or the nadis. Sadhguru has designed the practices in such a way that ensures nearly every joint and part of the body gets some moment.

Practices

  • Directional Moments: Provides the different directions to the Arm muscles and joints.
  • Neck Moments: Focused mostly on the different directional moments of the neck and shoulder.
  • Knee Moments: Clockwise and anticlockwise direction of the knee in a chair-like sitting position.
  • Squatting: Focuseson the knee moments and the muscles of the thigh and calf get their maximum stretch also there is a stretch in the waist and hip muscles and moments on hip joints.
  • Preparatory Asanas:
    1. Patanga Asana: Patanga means butterfly posture. This is to loosen up to lower limbs of the body so that you can sit comfortably cross-legged.
    2. Shishupal Asana: Shishupal Asana means baby care pose. This is also to loosen up the lower muscles of the body.
    3. Nadi Vibhajan: We can also call this cat stretch. Have you seen how a cat or dog stretches their body after sleep? So when you sleep the metabolic activity in you drops and you feel very lazy. So Nadi bhajan is a very good tool to get back the metabolic activity to normal.
  • Nadi Shuddh: This is a pranayam. The literal meaning of the Pranayam is to control the prana means the basic life energies. This actually balances your basic energy channels the Ida and the Pingala. Which ultimately balances the other nadis that flow through this basic nadis.
  • Nadi Shuddhi: Balances basic energy channels, enhancing peace and clarity.
  • Nada Yoga: Nada yoga is to utter the source sound of the creation. AA, UU, and MM. This is to clutter down the mental chatter uttering of AUM is very powerful and takes you towards mental peace. In my experience, it will break the mental stiffness and enhance acceptance which ultimately leads to peace and clarity about life. This is also helpful to get rid of fear, stress, anxiety, and depression and also helps you in decision-making.
  • Shambhavi Mudra: Even If you are very intelligent, sharp, and in a good position but still suffering in your life and someone even with average intelligence life is going well. Why is this? Because one has the grace other has not that grace. That you can get with this Shambhavi mudra. If you want to dig deeper you can go through the inner engineering and learn the Shambhavi Mahamudra.
